Cross Country Skiing

We’ve been setting our clocks back 1 hour each night for over a week and then yesterday we skipped Friday so it’s now Saturday.  Silly international date line (even though we haven’t officially crossed it so no idea why we did it this way).  There’s 24 hours of daylight so it’s not like it matters much anyway.  The 12th of January never happened for me.

Today we parked the ship right up against an ice sheet and it was truly an Antarctic experience.  The temperature was about 28 degrees but it was 35mph winds with very low visibility.  The best part of it was that I got to cross country ski!!!  It was such a blast!  Going away from the ship was difficult because we were going against the wind, but coming back was easy…I was essentially a sail.  We got to see a few Adelie and Emperor penguins.  Below, you can see that even the Adelies are having a hard time in the wind.

After our ice trek, we started to make our way slowly towards to Ross Sea again and came across a grouping of penguins.  In the group of Emperors there were two chicks which was highly unusual to find but super exciting!

Today was blustery, cold, windy, snowy, and overall a great day!

The ice is so stark.. What a unique perspective, especially on XC skis
