Terra Nova Bay

In the morning we got to take the kayaks and and glide around the fast ice for about an hour.  The water was so calm, it was like gliding on glass.  Naturally I forgot to put a memory card in my camera so I have no photos of that experience…go figure.  It’s not like I have a shortage of ice photos though :-)

In the afternoon we made landfall at Inexpressible Island.  The weather was gorgeous: sunny, blue skies, light wind and 27 degrees.  On the back side of the island, there was a large Adelie colony that was protected so we couldn’t visit it, but we could see the penguins that had ventured away.  The colony has been dated to being an active colony for over 7000 years.

The beach that we landed on had a bunch of sunning Waddle seals on a very unique glacier.  The seals look like very rounded rocks on the ice.  The exposed glacier front along the water was old and very dense ice.  It was a beautiful day to be out and about.
