Coulman Island and Cape Adare

Published on 22 January 2024 at 19:55

21 Jan we were at Coulman Island.  The ship pushed right into a fast ice shelf and were got off for a bit of snow shoeing.  Snow was deep and visibility was low, making the giant mountain next to us very hard to see.  I only have a few photos from that trek because there wasn’t mush around, it was just great to get off the ship and stretch our legs.

22 Jan we were at Cape Adare.  Carsten Borchgrevink was the first explorer to winter on the continent and the first structure was erected.  It’s the first building built on any continent and it’s the first that is still in existence on any continent.  His expedition had many firsts: including the first person buried in Antarctica, first attempt to explore the continent, and first scientific study in Antarctica just to name a few.  The ice around the landing site was too thick so we couldn’t go into the hut this time around.

The other highlight to the beach is the Adélie penguin colony.  It’s estimated to contain over a million penguins.  It was also our last day in Antarctica and tonight we began our journey north to the Sub New Zealand Islands.  Enjoy the pics from the last two days.
